Rucker’s Hill Sage Bungalow

The home is a defining residence of the Mount View Estate, and situated on the slopes of Rucker’s Hill, a unique precinct within Northcote notable for its heritage homes. The owners of this special home knew their property had great potential, but also realised that a previous extension had not been well thought through and had resulted in under-utilized spaces.

When andever were asked to create a vision for how their home could adapt, we took the time to: understand how they live, identified issues, provided options and (after many conversations) advised that the best approach would be to address the problems over two stages.

• Stage 1 would be a renovation that flipped spaces, created multi-purposes zones and refreshed some areas.
• Stage 2 would be a compact extension (at a modest 12.8 sq.m.) that would re-orient the dining room towards the deck, allow for larger gatherings as well as bring in more light, borrowed views and a green retreat.

Rather than working against the existing structure, we found possibilities within it that the client’s hadn’t considered. The result is a home that now has excellent flow, suits their lifestyle, seamlessly connects heritage elements to contemporary flourishes, and provides many small moments of joy in their daily routine.
